NRL Tips – Round 19, 2018

Now that Origin is over and we’re in the run to the finals, it’s time to take a quick look at how the tipsters are performing. Our NRL tippers are doing comparatively well and have more or less stuck together. Eratosthenes leads for the second year in a row on 61.7% (84/136) with the Jury surprisingly bringing up the rear with 58.8%, which is only four correct tips behind the leader.

In the ISC, things have been less rosy with me lagging on 56.3% (67/119), despite pulling in a perfect round at one point, and the joint leaders are Euclid and the Jury on 63.8% (76). The spread for QCup is wider than the NRL, which is interesting and suggests some different dynamics are at work in the competitions.

NRL Tips – Round 18, 2018

If you’re interested in tonight’s final Origin game, I think Queensland will win. There’s no particular reason and I’m well aware that Slater’s track record in milestone games is not flash but I don’t think the Blues will turn up with the intensity required to actually get the sweep. They were perilously close to losing game II and the Maroons have dumped one of the players responsible (how Will Chambers still gets a run on is beyond me). I gather from the media frothing over the idea, and subsequent undermining of the Maroons’ achievements from the state media, that Brad Fittler is quite keen on the idea so maybe he will do his job well, something that the Blues will be unfamiliar with, and get them over the hump.

Either way, we would’ve been better served with an Australia-Tonga test over a dead rubber.

NRL Tips – Round 17, 2018

I’m still out of sync after Rep Round but I at least got my tips in before the kick-off of the first game. In stark contrast to the other half round, round 17 offers some interesting match-ups and, with only two games in Sydney, we might actually see some people in the stands. And because it’s a short round, I’ve written up all four games.

NRL Tips – Round 16, 2018

I was enjoying the week off that the rep round afforded me from doing tips and recaps. But before I knew it, I had some tipping to do and I was out on Wednesday and late home on Thursday. As a result, this will probably be completed sometime after Dragons-Eels and published Friday morning. Normally, I’d try to get it up on Wednesday morning.

Then again, if you need me to give you a tip for this game, you’re beyond my help (he writes, like an idiot, as Parramatta are up 10-2).

Stats of Six – Rep/Origin Weekend, 2018

Not being a typical NRL round weekend, I find myself at a loss for a Thursday post so I thought I’d toss a bunch of little things out there – six, to be specific – and see what sticks. I don’t expect this to be a regular format but it might come in handy to get smaller ideas out there, especially seeing as all anyone is reading these days seems to be long form works of analysis and history.

NRL Tips – Round 15, 2018

If you were wondering, I’m now in third place in my work tipping competition. A solid run over the last four to five weeks has seen me drag myself up from the lower depths, outside the top twenty, and making a charge for that cash money prize. And unlike the guy coming first, I haven’t had a perfect round so no two bonus points for me to use as a crutch.

That said, it was far from a spectacular round of ISC tipping last week. It did not go well at all, for a second week running, so I guess we’re reverting to mean on that one.

NRL Tips – Round 14, 2018

Game I of Origin has come and gone and it mostly lived up to expectation. I might do a short wrap-up early next week when the dust has settled a little bit. While it’s disappointing to be on the losing end, it wasn’t an awful performance from the Maroons, unlike last year’s opener in Brisbane. Generally speaking, I don’t mind my team losing if it’s against a good opponent and they don’t embarrass me for being affiliated. NSW turned up and earned the win. Still, go fuck yourselves.

Sorry, that’s the lizard brain talking. In tipping, last week was a return to more normal form with only two correct in each comp. That’s not so bad in the NRL, especially a shortened round where more than a few got zero, but that’s pretty crap in the QCup, which had a full complement of games.
